CHECKIN
Gamified Mental Wellbeing Application

Our team conceptualized and developed CheckIn, a mobile application designed to improve mental health awareness and proactive management among young adults. The app combines self-assessment tools, physiological tracking, and gamification to foster healthier habits. By offering a tailored approach, CheckIn empowers users to integrate mental well-being into their daily lives.
Timeline
Over a ten-week period, we conducted research, designed, developed, and tested the app. Despite challenges such as tight deadlines and limited resources, we maintained an agile and user-focused approach.
Background
Mental health issues often go unnoticed until they escalate, particularly among young adults adjusting to work life. With limited access to professionals and long waiting times, proactive and accessible solutions are essential. CheckIn bridges this gap by offering data-driven insights and actionable feedback.
This category details the step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, planning, design, development, testing, and optimization phases.
Research & Planning
Through surveys, literature review, market research, and interviews, we identified key pain points: a lack of accessible self-assessment tools and limited understanding of physiological mental health markers. This research guided our app’s feature set.
Design & Prototyping
We developed a user-centric interface featuring mood diaries and biomarker tracking. Prototypes were iteratively refined to ensure a seamless and engaging user experience.
Implementation
Integrated self-assessment tools and mood tracking, monitoring emotional biomarkers like heart rate and sleep, while analyzing social media and texting patterns for mental health insights. Gamified rewards encourage healthy habits, with personalized tips to enhance well-being.
Testing & Optimization
Usability testing revealed opportunities to enhance engagement through refined gamification mechanics and personalized feedback. Metrics such as streak completion and feature utilization were key in optimization efforts.
CHECKIN offers a comprehensive and proactive approach to mental health, blending technology with user-friendly design to empower individuals.

CheckIn was my first Finnish project, and it highlighted cultural differences in work practices and problem-solving. Working with supervisors shifted my focus from revenue-driven goals to prioritizing user needs, emphasizing ethical design and societal impact.
This experience honed my user-centered design, ethical decision-making, and problem-solving skills, while also improving my cross-cultural communication and adaptability. It reinforced the importance of creating solutions that are both impactful and socially responsible.
